The former Macquarie Bank boss has been appointed special envoy to South-East Asia in a move the prime minister says further underscores Australia’s commitment to deepen engagement in the region.

The Albanese government has appointed former Macquarie Bank boss Nicholas Moore as Special Envoy to South-East Asia in a move the prime minister says further underscores Australia’s commitment to deepen engagement in the region.

Mr Albanese said the strategy will set out a pathway to strengthen Australia’s economic engagement with South-East Asia, map current and emerging trade and investment opportunities and provide a practical roadmap to bolster two-way trade and grow Australian investment. “Rather than having another political role, this envoy means business. And South-East Asia is serious about business, especially in the post-COVID era,” said Dr Huong Le Thu, principal policy fellow at the Perth USAsia Centre. The ASEAN summit, the first of three summits Mr Albanese will attend in the region over the next week, is again being dominated by tensions with China.

United Nations General Secretary António Guterres told the summit that ASEAN nations had a duty to bridge the divide between China and the US which increasingly were becoming decoupled.US President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet Mr Xi on Monday in Indonesia, but no specific outcomes are expected.
