More cold weather is set to continue as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for large parts of the UK.

The Met Office has warned of potential transport delays, power cuts and icy surfaces across northern England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland over the next two days.

It comes after temperatures dipped below freezing at the weekend, in a dramatic shift from last week’s mini-heatwave.It says winds will increase this evening across parts of Northern Ireland, with gusts of 55 mph likely in places and even 60 mph in a few exposed spots. Across North Wales and northwest England, winds are expected to peak during the early hours, when gusts will widely reach 50 to 60 mph, and possibly around 70 mph close to some coasts. As a result, there may be delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.Forecasters said overnight showers of rain and sleet will ‘turn increasingly to sleet and hill snow by Thursday morning’. This could lead to 4cm of snow in higher ground areas.

The hike comes at the same time as a rise in National Insurance, inflation and council tax – leading to the biggest fall in living standards in 70 years. The ‘heat humans not homes’ guide includes ways to save energy and stay warm with thermals, electric blankets and other everyday items that can be purchased at a low cost.
