Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the best ensemble comedies out there. Every member of the team feels wholly realized, and they all play so well off each other, even when the usual dynamics are mixed up. Jake and Amy are perhaps the best-written sitcom couple of the modern era , and it will always baffle me that the late, great Andre Braugher never won an Emmy for his perfect performance as Captain Holt.
While it's still copaganda, this is a truly funny sitcom with a brilliant cast. Every person here is a fully fleshed-out character, with comedic chops and dramatic moments that both work. The plots reflect how weird and wild New York City can be, and offers a nice dream of what the police force could look like.This last season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while fine, never quite reaches the dizzying heights of the early years. The old and new remain mixt up pretty well, making a big and appealing bundle, and the humors and hearts of the show remain solidified and strong. Each detective has their own unique personality that makes them stand out, creating endearing dynamics that helped the show thrive for eight seasons.Easily one of the most rewatchable shows out there, as it never took itself too seriously, and poked fun at itself time and time again. The story of Jake and Amy's love story has always felt so natural and real that it's hard not to root for these characters. It's hard to really find a character who you didn't like . The heightened drama compared to something like Friends is a double-edged sword - it creates an environment where character moments carry more weight, but it also hurts the show on rewatch. When a show's problems are silly, you're just enjoying the characters responding to them, but when they're actually crimes then knowing how the episode's 'problem' resolves makes the experience less satisfying.One of those sitcoms that you can rewatch random episodes of at any time and still get a good laugh out of it. The comedic timing is on point and everyone in the cast pulls their weight. Jake and Amy's relationship is one of my favorites in recent TV, and it's refreshing to see a couple that isn't laced with drama and just lives their life peacefully. As far as copaganda goes, B99 does feel at least self-aware and genuinely tries to address some of the issues that come with it.Though its premise hasn't aged well, Brooklyn 99's quick-wit and lovable cast will keep it a beloved sitcom for many years to come. Playing on the tropes of sitcoms and cop shows, each character is incredibly memorable, and their development over the years makes you fall in love with them even more, watching them grow at work and as people. Despite this, Brooklyn 99 isn't afraid to embrace the absurd, even in the midst of more serious, serialized arcs like when Holt and Jake have to go into witness protection. Because of this, the series feels incredibly easy to get into, and have a consistent tone throughout.Few shows warrant being called perfect, especially comedies, but with just how great its comedy is, along with equally great moments of drama and heart,is a rare show that earns that reputation. It easily stands out as one of the best Michael Schur comedies, if not the best, and that's unlikely to ever change.
