Amazon showcases new technological advancements, including robotics and disaster relief efforts, at its Delivery the Future event. The company emphasizes its commitment to environmental responsibility, community involvement, and local infrastructure in Australia, highlighting innovations that could reshape the shopping experience.
For many Australians, the idea of online shopping changed forever when Amazon entered the local market offering next day and now even same-day delivery for millions of products. The company has invested heavily in their fulfilment and delivery infrastructure here and this week in San Francisco they demonstrated several new initiatives that might not change the way you shop, but it is an impressive story of technological innovation.
Attending the company's Delivery the Future event there were pledges of environmental responsibility, community involvement and assistance with disaster relief, all notable ventures that are being attacked at a global scale but also locally in Australia. You probably don't realise that Amazon has more than a million robots working to move shelves and parcels around their fulfilment centres worldwide. Amazon has distributed more than 800,000 relief items to support communities around Australia during 17 natural disasters, and they have four disaster relief hubs here. But as the resident nerd in the room, my eyes were fixated on the robots and smart glasses announced today. You probably don't realise that Amazon has more than a million robots working to move shelves and parcels around their fulfilment centres worldwide.Blue Jay as it's known is an "extra set of hands" to help the staff and minimise their reaching and lifting. The company's Sydney "FC" at Kemps Creek is an impressive place to visit, where robots bring shelves of products to Amazon workers to pick, and pack for distribution to shoppers. A new and impressive robot arm has been developed by Amazon to enable them to create smaller fullfillment centres and put them closer to the shoppers. Amazon's chief technologist for Robotics Tye Brady, says, "Our latest innovations are great examples of how we're using AI and robotics to create an even better experience for our employees and customers." "The goal is to make technology the most practical, the most powerful tool it can be, so that work becomes safer, smarter, and more rewarding." Blue Jay as it's known is an "extra set of hands" to help the staff and minimise their reaching and lifting. When it's operating it looks like a juggler holding parcels and moving them around, but it never drops the ball. One delivery driver from Amazon, Kaleb M from Nebraska, was able to test the technology. Out on the road, Amazon is leaning into one of the most disruptive and innovative technological spaces right now - smart glasses. We already have Apple's Vision Pro, Samsung too is announcing such a device, and Meta has their Ray Ban smart glasses which now feature a display on the glass for the wearer to see and read. It's that "head up display" concept that Amazon is launching for their drivers, allowing them to focus on the task at hand, rather than constantly referring to a smartphone or tablet device. These smart glasses allow for turn by turn walking directions, plus the ability to scan parcels to ensure the right parcel goes to the right home. Warning delivery workers of dogs, or informing them of entrance codes, all within their view while they walk. One delivery driver from Amazon, Kaleb M from Nebraska, was able to test the technology and says "I felt safer the whole time because the glasses have the info right in my field of view." "Instead of having to look down at a phone, you can keep your eyes forward and look past the display—you're always focused on what's ahead." The power of the glasses is worn on the driver's vest, with a cable connecting to the glasses which also gives them an emergency services button, and a swappable battery for all-day use. No word on if or when these glasses will be used by Australian Amazon drivers, but if you see them wearing glasses like this, they may already know about your barking dog before they even approach the house.
